The gist

You run a whole hostel. Not a department — the whole thing. Front desk, bar, kitchen, housekeeping, maintenance, events, and up to fifty people who all report into you.

You own the occupancy, the operational budget and the atmosphere. Mad Monkey moves you to Southeast Asia to do it, sorts the work permit, and pays for the flight.

The job, in five parts

The full description runs to 50-odd responsibilities across eight sections. Here is what they add up to.

  1. The whole property

Food and beverage, front of house, housekeeping, maintenance, events. Daily property checks across team, service, surroundings and safety. If it is broken, it is yours.

  2. Up to 50 people

Hire, train, review, promote and have the hard conversations. Weekly team meetings, real performance reviews, conflict you resolve yourself, with HR behind you rather than in front.

  3. The numbers

Occupancy and booking growth, financial projections, the operational budget set with your Regional Director, payroll, F&B margins, stock audits and cash flow.

  4. The atmosphere

“No Stress No Worries” is the standard, and holding it is the job. Events with the CER team, tour operators in and out of house, and guests who remember your name.

  5. Safety and standards

Health and safety compliance, risk assessments, fire and emergency procedure, COSHH, company audits and the remedial actions that follow them.

What we need from you

Must have

  • You have run a hospitality operation — hostel, hotel, bar group or restaurant
  • You have owned a P&L and a budget, not just a rota
  • You have led 20 or more people, and can talk about the ones who did not work out
  • You can relocate to Southeast Asia and stay at least two years
  • A passport we can get a work permit on in at least one of the countries listed above

Nice to have

  • Opening or refurbishment experience
  • A second language
  • Time already spent living in the region
  • Basic accounting beyond a spreadsheet

What you get

  • We move you

Flight out, and one home every year.

  • Permit and visa, paid

We apply, we pay, we renew. You sign things.

  • Somewhere to live

On site or nearby, depending on the property.

  • A full P&L, early

Most people wait until forty for a job this size.

  • A route to regional

Regional Operations is where good GMs go next.

  • 26 hostels to stay in

Staff rate across the group, wherever you land.

How we hire

  1. Apply

Ten minutes. Tell us which countries you would move to.

  2. Send a video

Two minutes on why you. Optional, and the best thing you can do.

  3. Two calls

Regional Operations first, then a founder.

  4. Meet a property

We fly you out to see the one we have in mind.

  5. Offer

Package agreed by country, then we start the permit.

Apply for this one

We get a lot of applications for General Manager, so read the video block before you send it.

Which countries would you move to?
Optional, but it works

Two minutes on why you.

Record it on your phone, no editing needed. We get a lot of applications for GM roles and this is the single biggest thing that makes one stand out. We are not being polite — it genuinely decides the shortlist.
